queenAdapted from The Ladies’ Book of Useful Information, compiled from many sources, 1896. (Yes, note the date — 1896 — these two formulas were 19th century wonders.)

The Queen’s Teeth Preserver

1 ounce coarsely powdered Peruvian bark
1/2 pint of brandy

Mix ingredients together in a glass jar and set for twelve days. Gargle the mouth (teeth and gums) with a teaspoonful of this liquid, diluted with an equal quantity of rose-water. Don’t rinse.

To Perfume the Breath
3 ounces extract of liquorice
1 1/2 ounces oil of cloves
12 drops oil of cinnamon

Mix and place in glass jar. Put a drop or two on the tongue.
