As an essential oil, lavender is antibacterial and antiviral. Lavender flowers contain a volatile oil, flavonoids, tannins, and essential oils that include the constituent linalool.
Commercial disinfectants can cause superbug overgrowth to happen, just as happens with antibiotics.
Reality Check: Lavender is expensive ($10 for .5 ounce), but a little goes a long way. It takes me a few years to go through a lavender bottle when I use it for this purpose, so for $2.50 a year you have a great antibacterial spray with many benefits, including odor removal from cutting boards.
