A TRUE FIND

Simplers Therapeutic Hydrosols, Rose Geranium in particular

THE GOODS

First let me point out that Simplers botanical hydrosols are wonderful. I have used the Rose Therapeutic Hydrosol for a number of years, frequently spraying it on myself or in the air for a light rose mist. I didn’t know until yesterday when I saw it at my health food store, that the company also offered Rose Geranium Therapeutic Hydrosol (more about that and ticks later in the blog).

Why are hydrosols so great? I love them because they are so much less dense, I’d say mistier, than essential oils. They are, in fact, not oils at all. As Simplers Botanicals Company points out, hydrosols– or floral waters— are co-created along with essential oils during steam distillation of freshly harvested plants. In fact, the bulk of the total yield of this process is the hydrosol which is rich in water soluble hydrophilic elements of the original plants.

The gentleness and the benevolent nature of the hydrosols offer a myriad of treatment possibilities when a more subtle approach is required.

A TICK-REPELLING HERB

The reason I am so excited about a Rose Geranium hydrosol is that it is the best herb around for repelling ticks (all the old herbalist books write about this) so I can use it on myself and the dogs! No heavy scented essential oils which dogs are very sensitive to. Simplers’ hydrosols come in an easy spray bottle, and one can easily spritz a dog’s collar or one’s clothing. Just make sure not to use too much of it as that will irritate the dogs…just spritz a dog’s collar 3-4 times. (Note that cats may not like rose geranium.)

THE EXPERIENCE

I’m getting ready to go out to dinner and I just spritzed myself and it makes me feel fresh and alive. Hydrosols hydrate dry, sensitive, mature or oily skin. Use after cleansing or shower; apply before using facial oils or creams. They also:
* Soothe sunburn and minor irritations of the skin.
* Are excellent for frequent flyers or high & dry altitudes that can dry out the skin.
* Provide a light cooling mist during hot days outdoors or in a dry office.
* Are calming; add a few teaspoons to a bath.

A TIDBIT

Infants, elders, highly allergic, chronically or terminally ill individuals may better respond to protocols of aromatic hydrosols where dosages of concentrated essential oils would be contraindicated.
