The Fourth “R” of Living Lightly?

We’ve all heard of the three “r’s” for living lightly on the earth, but a fourth? Try refuse. A sweet book, Wearing Smaller Shoes, by Chip Haynes, advises just saying no to over-consumption. Haynes notes that the phrase “plastic pumpkins” was invented to describe the many, many (too many) things that we all buy that none of us need. He and his wife managed to wear smaller shoes in suburban Florida, and one way they did this was by learning to refuse the lure of “the buy.” Eco-Win.
