Phytoestrogens like soy and red clover isoflavones pose no safety issues with regards to heart health and breast cancer risk, according to a meta-analysis from Austria.

The study was published in The American Journal of Medicine. It was based on the research of 92 randomized controlled trials with almost 10,000 participants. The researchers, led by Clemens Tempfer from the Medical University Vienna wrote: “Our findings have implications for women seeking safe […] alternatives to hormone replacement therapy.”

There has been a lot of confusion about the safety of soy. This is partly because soy isoflavones are naturally occurring estrogen-like compounds called phytoestrogens. Too much estrogen is linked to increased risk of breast cancer. Some mice studies have shown that phytoestrogens can increase chances of breast cancer. However, studies also show that those with soy-based diets tend to have lower amounts of breast cancer.
